Ghanaian highlife artist Gyedu-Blay Ambolley regarding the impact of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) on highlife music in Ghana.

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, a veteran highlife musician, has been a vocal critic of the VGMA awards scheme for some time. In an interview, he expressed his concern that the VGMA was not giving enough recognition to highlife music, which he sees as the foundation of Ghanaian music.

According to Ambolley, the VGMA’s focus on other genres like hiplife and Afrobeats has led to a decline in interest in highlife music among young people in Ghana. He believes that the VGMA should do more to promote and support highlife music, which he sees as an essential part of Ghanaian culture.

It is worth noting that the VGMA is just one awards scheme in Ghana’s vibrant music industry, and there are many other platforms and events that celebrate highlife music and other genres.
