Renowned Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo has openly criticized the organizers of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) following a challenging experience that left Ghanaian filmmakers stranded at the Kotoka International Airport. The incident occurred as they attempted to travel to Lagos, Nigeria, for the prestigious 20th edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards, held on Saturday, November 2, 2024.
Gloria Sarfo expressed her frustration and disappointment with the organizers of the AMAAs, highlighting what she described as poor logistical arrangements for Ghanaian invitees. Sarfo recounted that the tickets provided by AMAA organizers were insufficient to facilitate a smooth boarding experience, leaving her and other Ghanaian filmmakers stranded at the airport, unable to board their flight.
“This is unacceptable, and it’s sad that we had to experience this kind of treatment,” Gloria said in her video, visibly upset over the incident. “It is not just about us missing the event, but the lack of respect shown toward Ghanaian filmmakers.”
The AMAA awards, which celebrate excellence in African cinema and showcase the continent’s talents, are one of the most highly regarded events in the African film industry. However, this year’s event has stirred controversy and disappointment among Ghanaian attendees, who felt the logistical mismanagement overshadowed the event’s otherwise prestigious nature.
This incident has ignited conversations on social media, with supporters rallying behind Sarfo and echoing her sentiments. Many expressed concerns about how logistical issues could impact the reputation of such an esteemed award ceremony, especially for international attendees who are eager to celebrate African cinema’s growth and achievements.
As of now, the AMAA organizers haven’t issue an official response to the incident.
