Accra once again came alive with color, sound, and creativity as the Chale Wote Street Arts Festival 2025 took center stage. What began over a decade ago as a small one-day community event in Jamestown has transformed into West Africa’s biggest arts and culture festival, now celebrated over the course of a full week.
This year, the festival moved its home to Osu, at the iconic Black Star Square, welcoming thousands of artists, performers, and culture lovers from Ghana, across Africa, and the diaspora.
The 2025 edition carried the powerful theme “The Orbs Beneath the Nile Lead to Kongo”, a call to reconnect with African spiritual traditions, histories, and shared cultural memory. The theme provided a framework for exhibitions and performances that reimagined African identity and confronted colonial legacies while celebrating resilience and creativity.
Chale Wote has always been more than just a street festival, it’s a cultural movement. This year in Osu, the Black Star Square transformed into a vibrant hub of:
Striking murals and installations that turned the cityscape into open-air galleries.
Spiritual processions and rituals linking African ancestral traditions with contemporary culture.
Music, dance, and fashion showcases that drew crowds late into the night.
Film screenings, poetry, and storytelling spaces exploring African history and futures.
Food and craft markets that brought community and commerce into the mix.
Beyond the entertainment, Chale Wote has grown into a continental platform for cultural dialogue. It connects communities, empowers artists, and inspires audiences to think critically about history, identity, and collective memory.
